About

Welcome to my boutique!
Tanner Bates is a small family business on the Dartington Estate in South Devon, England.
John Hagger, a 3rd generation leatherworker, created the business out of his lifelong passion for the craft. His training as a saddler and bridlemaker can be seen in the traditional look of his original, contemporary designs.
English leatherwork has a worldwide reputation for quality. Walsall saddlery and Northampton hand made shoes are among the best there is.
All Tanner Bates leathergoods are hand made in this same tradition. We use the same hand tools and techniques that made English leatherwork famous.
Our leather is traditionally made in family tanneries where they still use tree barks to transform skin to leather.
The Oak Bark Leather Belt is made from leather tanned here in Devon using oak bark from the Lake District.
Where possible we use buckles and fittings from foundries in the UK
